Our Opinion on the Latest News
From The Ankler: TV Writers Found 139,000 of Their Scripts Trained AI. Hell Broke Loose

Wscripted Opinion: At Wscripted, we closely monitor the latest developments and legal changes surrounding copyright protection. In November, our CEO participated in a panel discussion on Ethical AI, exploring how it can serve as a tool to safeguard copyrighted works while also helping writers gain visibility. Joining the conversation were notable experts, including a Policy Researcher from the WGA West, a coordinator from the European Parliament, and a legal expert involved in drafting the EU AI Act, which will shape how writers are compensated when their works are used to train AI models.
One of the problems that was discussed during the debate was the impossibility to know which works were used to train AI models. The recent discovery by The Atlantic that found that more than 139,000 Hollywood works were utilized in a dataset to train AI models is deeply troubling and, in our view, represents a clear violation of copyright law. However, this revelation also opens the door to resolving compensation disputes by mandating all AI companies including Microsoft, Google, Apple, Anthropic, Meta, Nvidia, Salesforce, Bloomberg to compensate the authors of these works. Implementing such a policy would establish an essential industry standard, providing much-needed protection for authors and copyrighted materials.
For now, the EU AI Act—the first comprehensive legislation regulating artificial intelligence—has introduced an opt-out exception. This allows writers to include a clause declaring that their work cannot be used for training AI models. However, this measure does not retroactively apply to works that were previously scraped from the internet and used without permission. Additionally, once a model has been trained, it is impossible to reverse or "de-train" a model by removing the source material. Therefore, it is imperative to establish clear regulations to protect copyrighted works from AI training and implement a compensation framework.
Given these challenges, we recommend that writers take the following steps:
We recommend to not make your script or book available on any public website that is not safeguarded by high-security standards. Instead, showcase your project only via account-protected platforms such as Wscripted+, which adhere to high-security standards, encrypts all data and stores AI models in escrow.
We also recommend sharing you projects with a clause that forbids the use of your project for AI training in accordance with the EU AI Act. Wscripted+ will add this clause directly to your PDFs of scripts and books, allowing you to download PDFs with the clause before sharing it with others via email.
We recommend to limit the number of people you share your script with via email, as they could use AI technology to exploit your work. We recommend using trusted platforms such as Wscripted+ to provide producers or readers with coverage that you can write yourself or edit after AI generation, rather than having them use platforms that may infringe your copyright.

How you can use Wscripted+:
E-coverage of Scripts and Books with or without AI*
This feature enables writers to share their projects and be discovered via Wscripted+ with an already industry-standard coverage. The coverage can be generated via AI or written directly by you as a writer. Wscripted+’s e-coverage aims to replace email to support producers in reading faster and help writers get their projects read.
Audio Script and Audio Book with Faster Speed
This feature has been requested by many producers and writers who have issues concentrating when reading projects or reviewing a project. Wscripted’s audio technology enables playback of the coverage with faster-speed audio of the full script or book in English, French, or Spanish. We will soon replace the current audio technology with multiple voice audio, so you can play your script with different voices for characters, similar to a table read.
Coverage Edits, Shares, and Access Approvals
This feature enables you to edit the coverage generated by AI, share your project page with others to review your project from the platform instead of a PDF. The platform also gives you full control over who can read your project by approving view requests from producers discovering you on the platform.
Character Breakdown with Diversity Analysis
This feature breaks down the full list of characters from your script or book and generates a diversity analysis, which was road-tested by a group of 10 producers during a workshop with the Cannes Film Market this year. The feature provides the ratio of diverse characters, the speaking time between female and male characters, and the Bechdel test results.
Discovery of New Writers Beyond Network
This feature promotes projects from writers on the Discover page, enabling all members to discover your project. Similar to our old talent platform, this enables producers, agents, and studios to discover new projects. The difference is that projects can be discovered faster thanks to the coverage and faster-speed audio technology.
Project Curation & Recommendations*
This cutting-edge feature positions Wscripted+ as the only technology to break bias and empower writer discovery. Instead of submitting a script and paying a lot of money to receive a subjective score and potentially never being discovered on a talent platform or by a producer, Wscripted+ recommends all projects based on the creative interests of producers and agents. Every week, each member receives 10 tailored recommendations of projects that meet their creative interests. This enables producers to find the right talents for them and writers to be promoted to the right decision-makers, fundamentally breaking entry barriers. Wscripted+ has managed to automate decision-maker matching from a creative standpoint and not a credentials standpoint, something that was impossible to do before and we believe is a breakthrough.
Writers’ Page*
This feature enables you to showcase your bio, IMDb, agent/manager contact, and all the projects you have listed on Wscripted+. This feature that showcases writers' profiles is similar to our old talent platform but is different in that it is focused on the promotion of your projects to be optioned or hired.
Non-AI Training Badge*
Wscripted’s team is closely following the laws being negotiated to protect copyrighted materials and has built into the technology a badge that enables you to download and share your full project in PDF, with a clause to prevent your project from being used to train AI systems or uploaded into unsafe or non-compliant systems that may infringe on your copyright.
*Coming this December
